A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 has struck the southern region of Peru, causing significant damage and raising fears of casualties. The tremor occurred at approximately 04:18 UTC (09:18 local time) on October 12, 2023, according to the Centro Sismológico Nacional CENSIS, which monitors seismic activity in the country.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 9 kilometers southwest of the town of Chala in the Arequipa region, at a depth of about 40 kilometers. The earthquake was felt strongly in the cities of Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna, where buildings shook violently and people were forced to evacuate.
